Frequently Asked Questions
Terrazzo was a standard finish in Florida residential construction through the mid-twentieth century, poured directly onto the slab. Later owners covered it with carpet or tile, so a great many houses still have intact terrazzo underneath. Lifting the covering and restoring what is beneath is frequently cheaper than installing a new floor.
It affects it heavily. Moisture moving up through a slab will lift film-forming coatings, which is why polished concrete — where the finish is the slab itself — tends to outlast epoxy in Florida. For wood, the priority is stable indoor humidity rather than the finish specification.
It is a common residential choice here precisely because slab-on-grade construction is the norm. The slab already exists under the floor covering, so polishing it removes a layer rather than adding one, and it handles tracked water and sand better than most alternatives.
